Guide to choosing a shaving brush

The Gentleman's Groom Room are stockists of the three main grades of badger shaving brushes: Pure, Super and Best.

Pure badger is the hair that covers over half of the badgers body. It tends to be of medium length, is generally light tan but can vary to nearly black and is the least supple of the grades. The Gentleman's Groom Room recommends our GB Kent BK2 priced at £30 or our Taylor of Old Bond St Pure badger brush boxed with a glycerin based sandalwood shave cream priced at £25.95. Both provide a great introduction to the pleasure of using a badger shaving brush.

Best badger hair is somewhat longer, covers approximately a quarter of the badgers body , is typically light but can vary to a darker tan and is a finer more flexible hair , since it is in shorter supply it tends to be more costly. The Gentleman's Groom Room recommend two of our brushes by Geo F Trumper the GT 3 large, Best, priced at £86 and the GT 2 medium, Best, priced at £73. These brushes are packed to a very high density with top quality hair, which makes them ideal for holding water, essential to achieving a better lather. In our opinion one of the best performing brushes on the market. 

Super Badger hair is the longest and softest of the grades and comes from the area around the animals neck and chest, its tips are very light coloured hence it is often called The Silver Tip. The luxurious supple of this hair provides an exceptional shaving experience .The characteristic flaired tips of this hair allows it to hold water on par with the high density Best badger brushes. The Gentleman's Groom Room recommend our Geo F Trumper Super badger large, priced at £45 and Trumpers Super Badger medium, priced at £40: both brushes are typical of Trumpers high standards and quality of product.

We also stock a 100% pure bristle brush which is made from Boar hair. This is a coarser hair than badger but provides a far better shaving experience than synthetic/ natural blends you may encounter. The Gentleman's Groom Room recommends our Arran Aromatics pure bristle brush priced at £17.50 that provides excellent value for money.
